I want to transform your understanding of recording drums so recording is a fun, creative process and not intimidating or frustrating.

In Introduction To Recording I'm giving you lessons from my 20 years of recording drums.  I will teach you what I've learned from my own experimenting and what I've learned from some of the best engineers in the business.

I recommend watching all the videos and experimenting as you watch each course.  There is no short cut to doing your own experimentation with your own drums, with your own gear, in your own room.

If you work on the concepts given to you in this course your ears will develop to understand the many choices you can make to achieve great drum sounds in your space.

The goal of micing drums is really about understanding how a song/loop should sound when it's all finished.  When we listen to any song, be it rock, pop, R&B, jazz, the drum sound is a defining key to the production of that tune.  We want to know where we're going when we start...or at least have a general direction.  Introduction To Recording will give you that foundation.

• I recommend starting with 1 microphone. you'll learn the importance of mic placement on your kit. A lot can be achieved with 1 mic when it's placed in the right spot and a very quick way to understand the microphone/s you own.
• Go inside my 21 drum sounds with 1 SM57 mic where I show you in detail how you can achieve so many radically different sounds with 1 mic.  I recommend trying to create your own version of this video.  See how far you can take it. I promise you will come away with a lot of eye opening knowledge.
• You'll be learning some excellent mic placements and/or patterns to use for 1, 2, 3 and 4 microphones with visual and audio examples.  If you understand how to get great sounds with minimal micing, the process of adding more mics actually becomes easier.
• You'll learn my process on how to measure phase and then check at your DAW so your great sound stays great. A simple phasing issue can ruin your awesome sounding drums.  But no worries, this process will ensure that doesn't happen.
• Stereo and Mono overheads have very different uses on drums.  They can be used separately or in conjunction with each other.  This lesson is devoted to teaching you the difference so you can choose properly for your sound.
• There is a huge variety of sound one can get micing a bass drum. Learn what kind of mic or mics to use and where to place them to get a sound that really defines a huge part of a song.
• The Beatles achieved some classic drum sounds with 3 and 6 mic setups.  Learn the placements and some compression techniques to achieving your own Beatle-esq sound.  Of course these 2 techniques not only produce "that sound", but many others so you can incorporate them as part of your expertise.
